• Owner: City of Chicago
• Engineer:  CTE Engineers—Chicago, Illinois
• Contractor: Walsh Construction Company—Chicago, Illinois

Description
After 99 years of service, the Animal Bridge on South Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, a very prominent and well-known historic structure, needed to be replaced.  The intent was to restore its functionality without destroying its history by creating new bridging units and reapplying the original facia.  The original arched shape, therefore, needed to be matched exactly which required a precise survey from which a custom form was made.   The resulting bridge should be good to go for another century.

Description
Located in an affluent area of St. Louis, Missouri near Clayton, the Metrolink mass transit system was installed underground to run beneath Forest Park Parkway and for aesthetic purposes.

680 Precast arch-shaped units were used to cover the underground portion of the corridor.  The 26-ton precast barrel units were mitered and beveled to accommodate the vertical and horizontal curves.

McCarthy had very limited working area in the field, since the tunnel excavation was in a residential/commercial area.  Often, the contractor chose to erect precast at night to allow uninterrupted field construction during the day.  Several items were embedded in the precast, including stray current mitigation plates and Halfen anchors for emergency exhaust fans and electrical duct banks.
